Hiking in Bergen
My favorite mountain walks and practical hiking tips.
Hiking & Nature — The City of Seven Mountains
Bergen is surrounded by seven mountains, and one of the things I love most about living here is how quickly you can leave the city behind and find yourself in nature. Some walks are easy, others take a full day. You don’t need a car for these favorites.
Every year, Bergen has a hiking event called 7-fjellsturen, with routes across several of the city’s mountains. The full seven-mountain route is a serious challenge, but you don’t need to do all seven to enjoy hiking here.
Fløyen — My First Recommendation
If it’s your first time in Bergen, start with Fløyen. Take the Fløibanen funicular up, enjoy the view and explore the forest trails. You can walk back down to the city, or stay longer and enjoy the sunset.

Skomakerdiket — A Short Walk from Fløyen
About 10–15 minutes from the top of Fløyen, you’ll find Skomakerdiket, a peaceful little lake surrounded by trees. It’s an easy walk and a lovely place to stop for a while.

Ulriken — A Different View of Bergen
Ulriken is the other mountain I’d recommend to first-time visitors. You can take the cable car or hike up the steep Oppstemten steps from Montana. The steps are demanding and can be slippery when wet, so I wouldn’t recommend that climb to beginners on rainy days.

Stoltzekleiven to Fløyen — For a Clear Day
If you enjoy a challenge, climb the steep Stoltzekleiven steps above Sandviken and continue along the mountain paths toward Fløyen. The views and quiet lakes along the way are beautiful. This is harder than a simple walk around Fløyen.

Vidden — Between Ulriken and Fløyen
For more experienced hikers, Vidden is a classic full-day walk across the mountain plateau between Ulriken and Fløyen. Allow roughly 5–7 hours or longer depending on conditions. It’s not a beginner route, especially in rain, fog or strong wind.
Løvstien — An Easier Alternative
For a gentler outing with beautiful views, try Løvstien along the hillside below Løvstakken. You can reach the area by public transport.
A Few Trail Tips
Check the weather and trail conditions before leaving. Wear shoes with good grip and bring a waterproof jacket, warm layers, water and snacks. For longer routes, use an offline map. Find detailed trail maps on UT.no.
