Nightlife in Bergen — My Local Guide
Compared with many other cities, Bergen has a pretty good nightlife scene for its size. Going out is easy, especially if you’re staying in the city center. Thursday to Saturday nights tend to be the liveliest, with students, locals and visitors all heading out. Even Bergen’s famously unpredictable weather doesn’t stop people from enjoying an evening together.
What I like is that the center generally feels comfortable to explore, although of course you should take the usual precautions at night. You can choose a cozy bar for conversation, somewhere elegant for cocktails or a lively spot with a DJ. Personally, I choose where to go depending on the weather.
Sunny Evenings — Start Around Bryggen
Whenever the sun appears, Bergen makes the most of it! On sunny Fridays and Saturdays, it’s common to see people enjoying a drink outdoors from late afternoon. I love the atmosphere around Bryggen, with the old wooden buildings and outdoor tables. Places like Madam Felle and Sjøboden are great for sitting outside and watching the city go by. You can move indoors if the weather changes.
One tip: alcohol is expensive in Norway, whether it’s beer or cocktails. If you’re there mostly for the sunshine and the atmosphere, a simple beer can be a nice choice.

Skostredet — A Charming Street for Drinks
A short walk from Bryggen, Skostredet is one of my favorite little streets for an evening out. There are bars and restaurants close together, with outdoor seating and a slightly different atmosphere. Dark & Stormy is one example, and you can also explore the pubs and restaurants around Charmante Skostredet. Some places are more stylish and a little pricier, but it’s a lovely area to wander around.

When You Prefer to Sit Inside
If it’s raining, or you want somewhere more elegant, Frescohallen opposite the Fish Market is worth a visit. The building is beautiful, with its high painted ceilings and a very special atmosphere. I would go there to sit, have a drink and enjoy the setting rather than for a big night of dancing. Cocktails can cost a little more here than in some other bars.

Where to Go Dancing
If you’re in the mood to dance, you have options too. Magda in the Skostredet area is one place to look into, and Dark & Stormy can have a livelier atmosphere. Café Norge at Hotel Norge sometimes hosts DJ evenings, and Bar 3 near Den Blå Steinen is another central option for music and dancing. Check each venue’s current program before heading out, since events and music can change from night to night.
These are just a few of my suggestions. One of the nicest things about Bergen is that you can walk between many different bars, start somewhere relaxed and decide later whether to stay or move on.
