A Local’s Guide to 3 Days in Bergen
Planning to spend 3 days in Bergen, Norway? I think three days is a great amount of time to explore the city.
You can visit famous places like Bryggen and Fløyen, but also enjoy quieter neighborhoods, local cafés and beautiful walks.
I live in Bergen, and this is how I would plan a three-day trip for a friend visiting the city.

Day 1 – Classic Bergen: Fløyen and Bryggen
Your first day is for the places you really shouldn’t leave Bergen without seeing.
9:00 AM – Start With Fløyen
Start your morning with Fløyen.
Take the Fløibanen up and enjoy the view over Bergen, the harbor and the surrounding mountains.
Spend some time at the top, take your photos and walk around.
If the weather is good, I recommend walking back down instead of taking the Fløibanen both ways. It gives you another side of Fløyen and makes the journey back to the city part of the experience.
Local tip: If it’s pouring with rain, take the Fløibanen back down. You don’t need to prove anything to Bergen. 😄
11:00 AM – Coffee at Det Lille Kaffekompaniet
Once you’re back down, stop at Det Lille Kaffekompaniet.
Coffee and carrot cake would be my choice here.
It’s small, cozy and feels very different from the larger cafés around the main tourist areas.

12:00 PM – Explore Bryggen
Now it’s time for Bergen’s most famous sight.
Walk along the colorful wooden houses of Bryggen, but don’t only photograph the front.
Go inside the narrow passages between the buildings too.
You’ll find little shops, galleries and Norwegian brands, and this is where Bryggen becomes much more interesting.

1:30 PM – Bergenhus & the Harbor
Continue toward the Bergenhus area at the end of Bryggen.
Walk around the historic area and harbor before heading back toward the Fish Market.
2:30 PM – Fish Market & a Great Bryggen Photo Spot
You should definitely see the Fish Market.
Personally, I wouldn’t necessarily choose it for my special seafood dinner in Bergen, but it’s worth visiting for the atmosphere.
Then walk to the opposite side of the harbor and look back toward Bryggen.
This is one of my favorite places to photograph all the colorful Bryggen houses together.
Sometimes the best view of Bryggen isn’t actually from Bryggen.

3:30 PM – Bergen City Centre
Continue through Torgallmenningen, Festplassen and the streets around the city centre.
Do some shopping, stop for another coffee or simply walk around without a strict plan.
Bergen is compact, so walking between places is part of the experience.
Evening – A Proper Norwegian Dinner
For your first evening, I’d have a proper Norwegian or seafood dinner.
Bryggeloftet & Stuene and Enhjørningen are two places I would consider around Bryggen.
This is the evening I’d spend a little more on dinner.
You don’t need an expensive Norwegian meal every night — one really good traditional dinner is enough.
Day 2 – Local Bergen: Sandviken, Skostredet and Nordnes
You’ve already seen the biggest sights.
Now slow down.
Day 2 is about neighborhoods, cafés and seeing some parts of Bergen that many short-stay visitors miss.
10:00 AM – Walk Through Sandviken
Start your morning in Sandviken.
It’s quieter than the city centre, with beautiful old wooden houses, narrow streets and a much more residential feeling.
Don’t rush through looking for one specific attraction.
The neighborhood itself is the reason to come.
Walk around, look at the houses and enjoy seeing another side of Bergen.
12:00 PM – Coffee & Something Sweet
After Sandviken, head back toward the centre and stop somewhere for coffee.
This is the kind of day where I wouldn’t plan every hour.
Find somewhere you like, sit down and take your time.
I would recommend kaf kafe Bryggen.

Bergen is a small and relaxed city. Part of enjoying it is not constantly running to the next attraction.
1:30 PM – Explore Skostredet
Next, walk through Skostredet and the surrounding streets.
This part of Bergen has a younger and more creative atmosphere, with restaurants, bars and independent places mixed into the old city streets.
It’s a nice contrast after spending your first day around Bryggen.
Afternoon – Nordnes
Continue toward Nordnes.
Nordnes is another area I really like when visitors have more than one day in Bergen.
Walk through the neighborhood and, if the weather is nice, continue toward Nordnesparken.
Grab a coffee or an ice cream, find somewhere to sit and relax for a while.
You don’t need to turn every hour of your holiday into sightseeing.
Evening – Relaxed Dinner & Drinks
For your second evening, I’d do something more casual.
Have dinner somewhere in the centre and then go for drinks.
Depending on the atmosphere you want, you could try somewhere like Vågal or Kulturhuset.
This is also a good evening to try something more modern instead of having another traditional Norwegian dinner.
Day 3 – Ulriken, Parks and Modern Bergen
By Day 3, you’ve already seen historic Bergen.
Today I’d show you a completely different side of the city.
Morning – Ulriken
Today we’re going higher.
Take the cable car up Ulriken and enjoy the views over Bergen, the surrounding mountains and fjords.
Walk around at the top, take your photos and have a coffee if you want.
If you’re not planning a proper hike, you don’t necessarily need to spend half the day here.
My simple Bergen rule is:
1–2 days in Bergen? Fløyen is enough.
3 days? Add Ulriken.
With three days, you finally have enough time to enjoy both without making your holiday feel like a mountain checklist.

Early Afternoon – Nygårdsparken
After Ulriken, come back toward the city and head to Nygårdsparken.
Walk through the park and slow things down after your morning on the mountain.
This isn’t somewhere you need to spend hours.
It’s simply a nice part of the route toward your next stop.

Coffee at BKB – Bergen Kaffebrenneri
Next, stop at Bergen Kaffebrenneri.
Have a coffee, sit down for a while and recharge.
By Day 3 you’ve already done plenty of sightseeing, so there’s no reason to rush.
Afternoon – Marineholmen & the Waterfront
Continue toward Marineholmen.
This part of Bergen feels completely different from Bryggen.
You’ll find a more modern waterfront area, students, locals and newer architecture.
Walk around the waterfront and bridge area and enjoy the views.
You don’t need a specific attraction here.
Sometimes simply walking around a different neighborhood is enough.

Optional – Try a Norwegian Sauna
If you’re interested in trying a Norwegian sauna experience, this is a great time to do it.
There are several waterside sauna options in Bergen.
For this particular itinerary, I would choose Marineholmen because you’re already in the area.
You can enjoy the hot sauna and, if you’re brave enough, cool down in the sea afterward.
There are also sauna options around Sandviken and Laksevåg, so you can choose another location depending on your plans.
Book ahead, especially during busy periods.
And remember:
The cold-water dip is optional. Nobody is checking how Norwegian you are. 😄
Evening – Your Last Night in Bergen
After Marineholmen or the sauna, head back toward the city centre.
I wouldn’t plan too much for your final evening.
Choose somewhere you genuinely want to eat, have a glass of wine or a drink afterward and enjoy your last night in Bergen.
If you already had traditional Norwegian food on Day 1, try something different tonight.
You could also choose somewhere with a more modern atmosphere, such as Omni, if that’s more your style.
Alternative Day 3 – Take a Fjord Cruise
There is one important alternative.
If you have never experienced the Norwegian fjords and this is your only opportunity, I would seriously consider using part of Day 3 for a fjord cruise.
You came all the way to western Norway, after all.
There are shorter fjord cruises from Bergen that take around 3–4 hours, which means you don’t necessarily have to sacrifice your entire day.
You could do:
Fjord cruise → late lunch → Nygårdsparken → BKB → Marineholmen → dinner
Or simply keep the afternoon flexible after the cruise.
Which Option Would I Choose?
If you’re already doing another fjord experience during your Norway trip:
Ulriken → Nygårdsparken → BKB → Marineholmen → optional sauna
If this is your only chance to see the Norwegian fjords:
Choose the fjord cruise.
Seeing the fjords is more important than trying to tick every Bergen attraction off your list.
What About Voss?
Voss is another great option from Bergen, but I wouldn’t squeeze it into these three days.
Voss deserves a full day.
If you’re staying in Bergen for four days or longer, consider taking the train and making Voss a separate day trip.
We’ll make a separate One Day in Voss from Bergen guide for that later.

A Few Local Tips Before You Go
Don’t over-plan Bergen. It’s compact, and some of the nicest moments happen when you’re simply walking between places.
Check the mountain weather. If Ulriken is completely covered in clouds, change the order of your days.
Bring a waterproof jacket. This is Bergen. 😄
Spend money where it matters. Have one proper Norwegian dinner, choose the mountain or fjord experiences you really want, and keep some meals simple.
Walk whenever you can. Bergen is one of those cities where the journey between attractions is part of the experience.
And most importantly, don’t spend your three days trying to see absolutely everything.
Three days gives you something much better:
Time to actually enjoy Bergen.
