Where to Stay in Bergen, Norway: Best Hotels & Areas

Best Area to Stay in Bergen for First-Time Visitors

Wondering where to stay in Bergen, Norway? The good news is that Bergen is a compact city, so you can explore many of its best places on foot.

If you’re visiting for the first time, I recommend staying in Bergen city centre.

You’ll be close to Bryggen, the Fish Market, Fløibanen, restaurants, cafés and shopping, and you can walk almost everywhere.

But I also don’t think you need to spend a huge part of your travel budget on a luxury hotel.

You’re coming to Bergen to experience the city, not to spend the whole day in your hotel room.

For most visitors, I would choose a comfortable mid-range hotel in a great central location and save the extra money for good food, fjord trips and experiences.

💙 My Local Advice

For a first trip, I would look for a hotel around Bergen sentrum, Ole Bulls plass, Torgallmenningen, the Fish Market or Bryggen.

My priorities would be:

1. Location
2. Comfort
3. Price
4. Luxury

That said, if you want to treat yourself, Bergen definitely has some beautiful hotels.

Luxury Hotels in Bergen – Treat Yourself

1. Hotel Norge by Scandic – My First Choice

Hotel Norge by Scandic

If budget isn’t your main concern, Hotel Norge would be my first choice in Bergen.

It’s right at Ole Bulls plass, in one of the best possible locations in the city. You step outside and you’re immediately around Byparken, Torgallmenningen, restaurants, cafés and shopping.

Bryggen and the Fish Market are also an easy walk away.

I especially like Hotel Norge for a romantic weekend, birthday trip or special occasion, when the hotel itself is part of the experience.

It also has restaurants, bars and wellness facilities, so if you want a little luxury during your Bergen trip, this would be my number one.

Best for: Couples, special occasions and travelers who want a beautiful central hotel.

Price: 💰💰💰 Treat yourself

2. Radisson Blu Royal Hotel – Best for Bryggen

Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Bergen

My second choice would be Radisson Blu Royal Hotel at Bryggen.

The biggest reason is the location.

You’re staying right beside historic Bryggen, so when you walk out of your hotel, you’re already in one of Bergen’s most famous areas.

You’re also very close to Fløibanen, the harbour and the Fish Market.

If you’ve always dreamed of visiting Bergen and want to wake up right beside the colourful Bryggen houses, this is a great choice.

Best for: First-time visitors who want Bryggen outside their door.

Price: 💰💰💰 Treat yourself

3. Bergen Børs Hotel – Beautiful and Very Central

Bergen Børs Hotel

Another beautiful option is Bergen Børs Hotel.

It’s located between Torgallmenningen and the harbour, so you’re right in the middle of Bergen.

The building itself has character, and it feels more special than a standard hotel.

I would consider Bergen Børs if you want something stylish and central but don’t necessarily want to stay directly at Bryggen.

Best for: Couples and travelers who like stylish hotels with character.

Price: 💰💰💰 Treat yourself

Mid-Range Hotels in Bergen – My Recommendation

This is actually the category I recommend looking at first.

You can stay somewhere comfortable and very central without spending too much money on a room you’ll probably only use for sleeping, showering and getting ready.

For most people visiting Bergen, this is the sweet spot.

Hotel Oleana – Boutique & Central

Hotel Oleana

Hotel Oleana has one of my favourite locations.

It’s at Ole Bulls plass, right in the centre of Bergen.

You have restaurants, cafés, shopping and Byparken immediately around you, while Bryggen and the Fish Market are still within walking distance.

It also has more personality than a typical chain hotel, so it’s a good choice if you want something a little more interesting without necessarily going all the way to the luxury category.

Prices can vary a lot depending on your dates, though, so compare it with the other central hotels.

Best for: Couples and travelers who want boutique style in the middle of the city.

Price: 💰💰 Mid-range to 💰💰💰 depending on dates

Scandic Torget Bergen – One of the Best Locations

Scandic Torget Bergen

If location is your priority, Scandic Torget Bergen is worth checking.

It’s right by the Fish Market.

Walk outside and you have Vågen, Bryggen and the harbour in front of you, and Fløibanen is only a short walk away.

For someone visiting Bergen for the first time, this is extremely convenient.

If you find a good price here, I would seriously consider it before spending much more just to get a more luxurious hotel.

Best for: First-time visitors and travelers who want to walk everywhere.

Price: 💰💰 Mid-range

Scandic Bergen City – Practical & Budget-Conscious

Scandic Bergen City

This is the Scandic near Bergen Kino.

It may not be the hotel I would choose for a luxurious Bergen weekend, but that’s not really the point.

The location is practical and central.

You can easily walk to Torgallmenningen, Byparken, restaurants, cafés and shopping, and continue towards the Fish Market and Bryggen.

This is exactly the type of hotel I mean when I say you don’t necessarily need to spend heavily on accommodation.

Best for: Travelers who care more about location and value than luxury.

Price: 💰💰 Good-value mid-range

Scandic Ørnen – Convenient for Train & Bus Travelers

Scandic Ørnen

Scandic Ørnen is another option I would consider.

It isn’t beside Bryggen, but it’s still central and particularly convenient if you’re arriving by train or bus.

Bergen train station and the bus terminal are nearby, while you can still walk into the main city centre.

I especially like this option for travelers who are using Bergen as part of a longer Norway trip.

Best for: Train travelers, short stays and people continuing their journey around Norway.

Price: 💰💰 Mid-range

Budget Hotels in Bergen – Save on Price, Not Location

This is where I would be careful.

I wouldn’t automatically book the cheapest hotel in Bergen.

A hotel that saves you a little money but puts you far away from everything isn’t necessarily good value.

If you’re trying to save money, I would first look for something simple in or very close to the city centre.

Citybox Bergen City – My Budget Pick for Location

Citybox Bergen City

If you don’t need luxury and mainly want somewhere comfortable to sleep, Citybox Bergen City is worth looking at.

It’s on Nygårdsgaten, so you’re still within walking distance of central Bergen.

This is the type of accommodation I would consider if I wanted to keep my hotel budget down without staying far outside the city.

Spend less on the room and use the money for a nice dinner instead.

Best for: Budget-conscious couples, solo travelers and short stays.

Price: 💰 Budget-friendly

📍 What About Nygård and Danmarksplass?

You can also look slightly outside the tourist centre.

Areas around Nygård, Solheimsviken and Danmarksplass can make sense when accommodation in the centre becomes expensive.

But I would always compare prices first.

If you’re only saving a small amount, I would personally pay a little more and stay in Bergen sentrum.

If you’re saving a significant amount, then moving slightly farther out can be worth it.

Citybox Danmarksplass – Good if the Price Is Right

Citybox Danmarksplass

Citybox Danmarksplass can be a good budget alternative when central Bergen hotels become expensive.

You’re farther away from Bryggen and the main tourist centre, but Bergen’s public transport makes getting around relatively easy.

I would choose this over a central hotel only if the price difference is worth it.

Best for: Budget travelers and longer stays.

Price: 💰 Budget-friendly

Moxy Bergen – Modern & by the Water

Moxy Bergen

Moxy Bergen is around Solheimsviken and has a more modern atmosphere.

The waterfront location is nice, but you’re farther from Bryggen and Bergen’s main tourist sights.

I would consider Moxy if you find a particularly good deal or if you prefer a modern hotel and don’t mind being slightly outside the historic centre.

For a first-time visitor, though, I would still choose Bergen sentrum if the prices were similar.

Best for: Younger travelers, modern-hotel lovers and people who find a good deal.

Price: 💰–💰💰 Budget to mid-range depending on dates

So, Where Would I Actually Stay?

If money wasn’t an issue:

🥇 Hotel Norge

If I wanted to wake up at Bryggen:

🥈 Radisson Blu Royal Hotel

If I wanted something boutique and very central:

Hotel Oleana

If I wanted the best balance of location and price:

Scandic Torget Bergen or Scandic Bergen City

If I wanted to save money but still stay fairly central:

Citybox Bergen City

💙 My Local Tip

My recommendation for most visitors is simple:

Choose a mid-range hotel in Bergen city centre.

Don’t spend a huge amount on your hotel just because it’s rated as one of the best in Bergen.

You’ll probably leave in the morning, spend the day exploring, have dinner and drinks in the evening, and return to the hotel when you’re tired.

At the same time, don’t save a tiny amount of money by staying somewhere inconvenient.

Being able to walk out of your hotel and immediately start exploring Bergen has real value.

Spend the money you save on a fjord trip, a great Norwegian dinner, coffee and cake, or another experience you’ll actually remember.

After all, you didn’t come all the way to Bergen to sit in your hotel room. ❤️
