How to Get from Bergen Airport to the City Centre: A Local’s Guide

How to Get from Bergen Airport to the City Centre: My Local Advice

Arriving in Bergen? Before you book your flight, here’s one small thing I really recommend checking: how you’ll get between the airport and the city. Taxis in Norway can be expensive, and you don’t need one for most trips to central Bergen.

My first choice is Bybanen (the light rail). My second choice is Flybussen (the airport express bus). I would only consider a taxi if neither option works for your arrival or departure.

1. Bybanen: my first choice for Bergen Airport transfers

Bybanen is Bergen’s light rail, not an underground metro. Take line 1 between Bergen Airport (Bergen lufthavn) and the city centre, at Byparken. The ride takes around 45 minutes, and it is easy, comfortable and a great budget-friendly option.

As of October 2026, an adult single ticket costs NOK 51. You can buy a ticket and check departures using the Skyss app (available for iPhone and Android). The app lets you check real-time departures, plan your journey and buy tickets. Get the Skyss app here. There are also ticket machines at light rail stops.

Personally, I recommend Bybanen both when you arrive and when you’re going back to the airport. It’s a simple way to save money for the things you’ll actually enjoy doing in Bergen.

Important if your flight arrives late or leaves early

Don’t assume the light rail runs at the same times every day. Late-night and early-morning departures can differ between weekdays and weekends. Even if you’ve heard there are trains late on Friday or Saturday nights, check the actual date and time in the official Skyss timetable for line 1 before booking your flight or planning your airport transfer.

2. Flybussen: my backup when Bybanen doesn’t suit your flight

Flybussen is the airport express bus. It has stops in central Bergen, so it can be useful if you’re staying close to one of them or travelling when Bybanen isn’t running. Depending on your stop and route, the journey can be quicker than the light rail.

For Flybussen, use the Flybussen website to check departures and book your ticket; it is a separate service, so a Skyss ticket is not valid on Flybussen. Check the official Flybussen Bergen booking page for departure times, prices and tickets. Buying online in advance is usually cheaper than buying on board. Be sure to check the current city-centre stops as well, especially if you have luggage.

One thing I would not do is rely on an old timetable or assume the first bus always leaves at the same time. Early-morning departures can change.

3. Taxi or Uber: convenient, but check the total fare

A taxi can make sense if you have a lot of luggage, are travelling as a group, or arrive when public transport is inconvenient. But it can be expensive. Compare available services and ask for the total price before you start the trip, including any applicable surcharges. Don’t assume Uber and a regular taxi will cost exactly the same.

My biggest tip: check your transfer before booking your flight

If you have a choice between two flights, look at the airport transfer options before you book. A cheaper flight that arrives very late or leaves extremely early may not save you money if you end up needing a taxi.

For me, Bybanen is the easiest recommendation for most people visiting Bergen. If its timetable doesn’t work, check Flybussen next. Leave the taxi as your final option.

Prices and timetables can change. Always check the official Skyss and Flybussen websites for your exact travel date.
